Invest to prevent violence against women and girls

As South Africa enters the global observance of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, we do so under the shadow of a persistent and deeply troubling reality. Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remain among the most grievous human rights violations confronting our nation. The brutalisation of women and children, often within their own homes, continues to stain the moral fabric of our society. This year’s theme, “Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls,” is a direct call for decisive, sustained, and well-resourced action. It speaks not only to monetary investment, but to the investment of political will, community responsibility, ethical leadership, and societal transformation. In a country where femicide rates remain among the highest globally, and where recent cases have once again revealed the terrifying vulnerability of women and children, this theme could not be more urgent. The South African landscape has in recent months witnessed harrowing incidents—women murdered by intimate partners, children subjected to unspeakable abuse, and countless victims silenced by fear, stigma, and systemic failures. These tragedies remind us of that GBVF is not an episodic event; it is a pandemic woven into the daily lives of far too many families.

To invest in prevention is to invest in: Stronger institutional accountability where justice is swift and uncompromising. Empowering women economically, thereby reducing dependency that often traps victims in violent relationships.

Educating boys and men to unlearn toxic masculinities and embrace respect, dignity, and equality. Building community environments where survivors are believed, supported, and protected. Strengthening social services, ensuring that no cry for help goes unanswered.

As we embark on these 16 days, let us reject complacency. Let us refuse to normalise the suffering of women and children. And let us recognise that prevention is not an abstract ideal, it is a national responsibility that demands courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment. May these days ignite a renewed determination to build a South Africa where every woman and every child can live without fear, and where the value of human life is upheld with the dignity it deserves. Let this year’s theme be our collective pledge: We will invest. We will protect. We will act. Till next Time
