AN inmate serving a 12-year sentence at the Flagstaff Correctional Service facility has been rearrested after escaping from custody.

Bonile Mgwili (36) has been in custody for murder.

He escaped from the correctional facility on Sunday, April 12, at 8.30am and on the same day, at 8.15pm, he was found in Lusikisiki.

Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo said that the police OR Tambo District Task Team based in Lusikisiki were alerted about the escape of Mgwili, who is currently serving a 12-year sentence for murder.

Matyolo said the task team’s investigation led them to the New Rest area in Lusikisiki where Mgwili was found locked in a room.

Mgwili appeared on Monday, April 13, before the Flagstaff Magistrate’s Court for a charge of escaping from custody. The case was remanded to May 5 to allow him to secure a lawyer of his choice.

Police OR Tambo district commissioner Major General Norman Modishana has commended the task team for their swift action in apprehending the inmate.
