A PARTNERSHIP between the Umzimvubu Local Municipality and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has created 80 employment opportunities for the local community.
This was witnessed at the signing of contracts by new recruits at KwaBhaca Town Hall on February 19.
They include 75 general workers, four supervisors and a clerk. They will play a vital role in enhancing environmental management and public cleanliness through litter picking, waste collection and disposal, street sweeping, landscaping and beautification, tree planting and pruning, grass cutting and greening of public open spaces.
The Umzimvubu Local Municipality has given them necessary personal protective equipment and tools of work to ensure safety and effective execution of their duties.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment will be responsible for the payment of stipends, as well as Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) contributions to all participants.
Councillor Inga Nodali of the Umzimvubu Local Municipality said that the recruitment programme assisted the municipality with regards to its efforts to fight unemployment.
“The initiative forms part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to becoming the cleanest and greenest municipality in the district of Alfred Nzo,” Nodali stated. One of the new recruits, Amanda Mkhwebula, was thankful for the opportunity and said that signing a contract has retained hope, dignity and a sense of purpose.
“Through the programme, I will support my family and contribute meaningfully to the development of my community. This opportunity has opened doors for growth, skills development and a brighter future,” she said.
It has been stated that the programme will not only improve environmental conditions across communities but also provide much needed employment and skills development opportunities for residents.
The Umzimvubu Local Municipality said this collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainable development, cleaner communities and improved quality of life for all residents.
