CAREER opportunities available in science were brought to the fore at this year’s Harry Gwala District Science Festival from May 4-8.
Science organisations, institutions of higher learning, government departments, health professionals and various stakeholders presented career paths in science that can be selected by learners.
They also shared a vision of empowerment to young people through education, innovation and career guidance in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI).
Loyiso Bavuma, senior education specialist in the Harry Gwala district’s Department of Education and founder of the science festival, said that this year’s event focused on exposing learners, particularly those from disadvantaged communities, to the wide range of opportunities and careers available within the STEMI sector.
He said practical demonstrations, motivational engagements and career guidance sessions formed part of event activities.
“Learners were encouraged to pursue academic excellence and consider careers that contribute meaningfully to the advancement of society and the economy,” he said. The non-funded science festival was launched in 2022 with one organisation on board. The following year, three organisations were involved. According to Bavuma, this year’s event brought in 23 organisations to empower learners with information.
On Monday, the event was hosted in Kokstad, and between Tuesday and Thursday it was moved to Umzimkhulu and Bulwer, targeting school learners from Grade 9 to Grade 11.
The festival wrapped up in Ixopo on Friday, with Grade 12 learners from all schools in the district.
Bavuma thanked the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) as well as the Greater Kokstad Municipality and all science organisations, institutions of higher learning, health professionals and stakeholders for their significant contribution towards the success of the festival.
“Their commitment, expertise, resources and willingness to engage with learners played a significant role in inspiring hope and broadening the horizons of many young people within the district,” he added.
He stated that the Harry Gwala District remains committed to strengthen partnerships with all stakeholders to continue creating platforms that inspire learners to pursue careers in science, technology and innovation.
