‘Lady T’ spins the decks

KOKSTAD-based DJ Thembisa ‘Lady T’ Melaphi has been delivering high-energy performances at local clubs and festivals despite a shortage of female DJs in the entertainment industry.

Speaking about the male-dominated field of spinning the decks, Melaphi has described the environment as the most challenging and exciting.

Born and bred in the rural village of Bubesi in Matatiele, Melaphi started playing music in 2023 after she was introduced to the art form by a local DJ.

She started performing as resident DJ at a local restaurant and later performed at events to connect her audience with the flow of music. She has shared various stages with well-known artists such as Black Diamond, Camp Masters, Shenge Wasehlalankosi, DJ Bongz, DJ Tira, DJ Answer, Lindo Mtangayi and many more.

“When the chance to play music was presented to me, I grabbed it with both hands. Despite being undermined because I’m a woman, many people enjoy my music,” she said, adding that she has no difficulty choosing the right tracks for her audience.

She said her talent is not only recognised in Kokstad but in many parts of KZN and the Eastern Cape.

In December last year, she released a song Circles, featuring Skeyes Theo. The song has been made available on digital platforms. Her ambitions are to develop more young female DJs and venture into producing music.

Melaphi has been nominated for the Best DJ category in the 7th Annual Mzansi Arts and Media Awards, competing among male DJs. The awards aim to drive passion in the creative community and recognise local talent.

To win the award, Lady T needs your votes. Voting lines are open until March 30.
