Mthatha man (29) was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition last Saturday, January 10.
Initially, the suspect from Tabase discharged the firearm at random. Police received a public complaint and through investigations the suspect was arrested at a local tavern.
Captain Welile Matyolo said that police found an unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistol with an erased serial number and eight rounds of ammunition.
“The suspect was immediately arrested and charged for unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Investigations into the alleged random shooting incident are still ongoing,” he said.
Police OR Tambo district commissioner Major General Norman Modishana has welcomed the arrest and issued a stern warning against negligent firearm use.
“Negligent firing is strictly forbidden and punishable by law. Police will leave no stone unturned in investigating this matter to establish the truth. Community members must always report such incidents in their areas,” said Major General Modishana.
The suspect was scheduled to appear before the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
