UMZIMKHULU talent, from television actors to musicians and public servants, was recognised, praised and appreciated at a recent event.
Certificates of recognition were given to show appreciation. Umzimkhulu Local Municipality hosted the first-ever event at Umzimkhulu Hotel on October 16 supported by various departments. According to municipal spokesperson Willie Mgcina, Umzimkhulu is one of the fastest growing areas in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We have noted that these individuals are doing tremendous work and decided to honour them while they are still alive,” he said.
Among the recognised talent were: former Public Protector Advocate Selby Baqwa and current Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka, both born in Umzimkhulu.
Other talents included maskandi artists: Masethembe “Skweletu” Chiliza, Zwelethu “Solwazi” Malunga, Yamkelani Jama, poet Kwazi Ndlangisa, sports anchor Andile Ncube, the late Maskandi artist Tholakele Malunga, television actor Bhekisizwe Mahlawe, television director Samson Tshomela, and artist Yamkela “King Nuba” Nuba.

The music and sports groups that were honoured were: Inkululeko, Washbank HomeBoys, Highland City Boys, Highlands Vela Brothers, Machunwini Black Swallows, James Black Birds, NMZ Combination, Abafana Bokuthula, Abafana Bokuthula Bangempela, award winning athlete Eleanor Rozani, athlete Janet Mbele and local football club Goodfellas FC playing in the provincial league.
Sign language interpreter and specialist Andiswa Gebashe from Umzimkhulu received flowers, with music director Ndumiso Mbalo, the late maskandi legend Danisile Dlamini, horse racer Mandla Mbele and award-winning jockey Bulelani Mjoli also recognised.

Golden Arrows FC coach Manqoba Mngqithi appreciated the recognition and said: “I have obviously travelled and been awarded in different aspects of life, but no award is more special than the one you receive from home.”
Umzimkhulu Local Municipality mayor Jabu Msiya said that the event will be hosted annually to recognise the talent.
