Calculator drive benefits learners

SIPHELELE NKETO

AS a way of supporting school learners doing mathematics and physical science, calculators were recently donated to four schools in KZN.

Two schools in Umzimkhulu, one in Ixopo and one in Durban benefitted from the drive.

The donation was a success after former ANCYL Harry Gwala regional chairperson Zwakele Mngonyama took the initiative to assist school learners in rural areas. He donated 123 calculators recently and another batch of 72 calculators will be donated to school learners in Ixopo next week.

Mngonyama was a speaker and deputy mayor for the former Ubuhlebezwe Local Municipality, now called Johannes Phumani Phungula Local Municipality. He said he has been carrying out school-related donations as his way of giving back to the community.

“The calculator drive is being supported by the private sector. I am collecting school shoes for next year’s back-to-school initiative,” he said.

He said he worked with councillors and friends in politics to identify the schools in need.
