Thrills and achievements at marathon

IN a rare and electrifying display of emotion, Harry Gwala District Municipality mayor Zamo Nxumalo could not contain his excitement when he danced in front of the roaring crowd over the remarkable success of the Harry Gwala Marathon.

The usually composed mayor stunned spectators when he sprinted onto the stage in visible excitement before unleashing some dance moves.

His spontaneous celebration drew loud cheers and applause from the crowd and captured the spirit of a marathon that has now firmly established itself among KwaZulu-Natal’s premier road-running events.

The celebratory moment reached another level of excitement when the Department of Science and Technology minister Blade Nzimande joined Nxumalo on stage.

Last Sunday, March 22, the event was widely hailed as a success as the town of Umzimkhulu was the marathon’s finish and main event host.

Although the gruelling 42km race began in Highflats, Kenya’s Peter Muindi powered to victory followed by Jobo Khatoane in second place and Simon Mwangi in third. Muindi, Khatoane and Mwangi were all from Kenya.

In the women’s 42km race, Rholex Kogo of Kenya also claimed victory, while local star Jenet Mbhele of Mzimkhulu Striders Club secured second place.

The third place was occupied by Mathane Nhlabathi.

The women’s 21km race was won by Winny Biwott, followed by Rachael Mbao in second place.

Despite the celebratory mood, Mayor Nxumalo struck a reflective tone, acknowledging that while the marathon had grown tremendously in stature and public support, local athletes from Harry Gwala still needed greater determination and preparation if they were to reclaim top honours from international competitors.

He praised the overwhelming turnout from spectators, the commitment of sponsors, the dedication of athletes and the vital role played by the media in elevating the marathon’s profile.

“This race has now reached a level where it stands among the most respected in KwaZulu-Natal,” he said, noting that the marathon has become a recognised breeding ground for runners who go on to compete in the prestigious Comrades Marathon.

He commended the collective efforts of municipalities and district leadership in ensuring the event’s success, describing the marathon as a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and shared vision.

Minister Blade Nzimande, who participated in the run, alongside Minister Richard Mkhungo, further underscored the significance the marathon now holds within sporting.
