IN the spirit of Human Rights Month, under the theme “Bill of Rights at 30: Making Human Dignity Real”, Matatiele Local Municipality in collaboration with various government departments will commemorate the month through meaningful initiatives across different sectors. The aim is to uplift communities and promote the values of human dignity, equality and freedom.
This was confirmed on March 10, when the Matatiele Local Municipality partnered with the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism to host a Military Veterans Information Sharing Session.
The engagement formed part of the government’s ongoing efforts to support military veterans who played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle of the country.
The session focused on empowering military veterans through opportunities in livestock farming and agro-processing, equipping them with information and resources that can assist them to participate meaningfully in the local economy.
The initiative also seeks to support emerging farmers while strengthening agricultural development and economic growth within the Matatiele area. The municipality said the military veterans remain an important pillar in the country’s democratic journey.
The municipality further said that the sacrifices of military veterans in the struggle for human rights laid the foundation for the freedoms enjoyed today, and many continue to contribute to community development and nation-building long after their service.
“Still commemorating Human Rights Month, Matatiele Local Municipality joined hands with SASSA to donate 48 full school uniforms to learners at Hotolo Primary School in Ward 22, in an effort to uphold and promote children’s rights. This meaningful initiative ensures that learners are supported and able to attend school with confidence and pride,” the municipality stated. It further said that access to education remains a fundamental right for every child.
