IT began as a modest recreational run among a small group of individuals in the town of Kokstad, but later evolved into one of the most highly anticipated and widely celebrated fun runs.
The MM’s Fun Run originated as an informal training initiative coordinated via WhatsApp. From the WhatsApp platform, it rapidly gained momentum and attracted considerable interest from across the community.
Today, has generated remarkable enthusiasm with more than 400 participants officially registered.
However, unregistered runners who were unable to meet the registration deadline will be permitted to participate, although they will not qualify to receive complimentary running T-shirts or other associated benefits.
Greater Kokstad municipal manager Sipho Zwane explained that after sharing his informal training initiative on WhatsApp, he received numerous calls from individuals proposing that the concept be expanded to a larger platform.
“Subsequently, many stakeholders came on board to establish a formal structure, which has ultimately resulted in the organisation of this race,” said Zwane.
He added that participants will travel from various locations, including Durban, Mthatha, Matatiele, Flagstaff, Lusikisiki, Johannesburg, Mbizana and throughout the Harry Gwala district.
Greater Kokstad mayor Lwanda Madikizela revealed that he will personally participate in the 5km race and announced that among the participants will be Sihle Zikalala, the deputy minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Phumzile Mgcina, the deputy minister of Minerals and Petroleum Resources, KZN Legislature speaker Nontembeko Boyce, Harry Gwala Development Agency CEO Qiniso Mnguni and Harry Gwala District Municipality mayor Zamo Nxumalo.
Meanwhile, the eagerly awaited event will necessitate the temporary closure of selected streets in Kokstad on Saturday morning.
