Cheers to matric top achievers!

MATRIC learners that performed well in the 2025 National Senior Certificate were acknowledged and honoured at an awards ceremony held at Maluti Civic Centre this week.

The event, hosted by the Matatiele Local Municipality in partnership with the Department of Education, celebrated the exceptional excellence of last year’s matric class from historically disadvantaged schools to top performing learners in all subjects.

Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor Patrick Stuurman applauded the Department of Education for improved performance of schools across the Matatiele area. The event did not only recognise the hard work of learners but also teachers as well as three top performing schools in the area. The schools were: King Edward High School that received a 100% matric pass rate, Focused High School which also got 100% and Hlangwini Senior Secondary that also achieved 100% in its pass rate. King Edward High School was awarded a R5 000 voucher, Focused High School R2 500 and Hlangwini Senior Secondary got a R2 000 voucher. Hlangwini Senior Secondary also received a R4 000 voucher for being the Most Improved School.

The three top performing learners from historically disadvantaged schools were: Kanetso President Matubatuba (Maluti Senior Secondary), Nqobile Lebenya (Mvenyane Senior Secondary) and Minentle Mpahleni (Maluti Senior Secondary). Walking away with a special award was Anikiwe Sogoni of Sive Special School for being the Top Learner for Persons with Disabilities.

The top 10 learners in the district were: Kanetso President Matubatuba (Maluti Senior Secondary); Nqobile Lebenya (Mvenyane Senior Secondary); Minentle Mpahleni (Maluti Senior Secondary); Lwandle Duma (Mvenyane Senior Secondary); Areahe Odumetse Kwili (King Edward High); Amkele Sibuku (Maluti Senior Secondary); Fikile Olwethu Sobethwa (Tholang Senior Secondary); Nkatleheng Mokoena (Maluti Senior Secondary); Asimbonge Masiza (Maluti Senior Secondary) and Unathi Sisanda Koyana (King Edward High).
