Municipality addresses bridge nightmare

SIPHELELE NKETO

THE dangerous crossing over a damaged bridge for the rural community of Ward 22 in KwaBhaca will soon be a thing of the past. This follows the introduction of a contractor to restore the bridge that was damaged during the 2024 floods.

The project is anticipated to be completed in six months. It will also include the construction of a 5.3km access road aimed at restoring connectivity and improving access for local residents.

Villagers have connected the damaged bridge to a makeshift wooden bridge as a temporal measure to cross. This poses a serious threat to their lives. Traditional leader Mthenjwa Mtyhide expressed sincere appreciation for the intervention by the Umzimvubu Local Municipality and said that the completion of the bridge will enable communities to cross safely.

Umzimvubu Local Municipality Portfolio Head for Infrastructure and Planning Zandile Garane emphasised the importance of the project in restoring essential infrastructure and improving the quality of life for the affected communities. The municipality further introduced a contractor for the installation of 60 streetlights in KwaBhaca.
