It’s been nearly a month since United Ladies FC was formed in the small town of EmaXesibeni in the Eastern Cape. The club’s objective is to develop female footballers, between 18 to 35 years old.
To fulfill that promise, it needs support in the form of soccer kits for its players and soccer balls.
Currently, the club gets by with borrowing soccer kits from a local school. Organiser Sifundo Fundana said the club was established early this month to nurture the rural talent of EmaXesibeni and surrounding areas.
He said the aim is to keep young women in sport and fight teenage pregnancy.
“Club founders decided to do something to defeat teenage pregnancy in the area. When schools are closed, young people get involved in so many wrong things. To keep them focused on life-changing goals, we want to keep them in sport,” he said.
The club contains 15 female players so far and it aims to get more players. Although the club is still in its starting phase, it has played two games in the local area.
