A GROUP of 25 families affected by the June floods in the Mthatha area have been relocated to temporary homes in Mayden Farm.
This was after the intervention by the Eastern Cape Provincial Government in collaboration with the OR Tambo District Municipality and other social partners including the South African Security Social Agency (SASSA).
This intervention forms part of the government’s ongoing commitment to ensure the resettlement, safety, dignity and well-being of communities affected by natural disasters. The relocation will provide temporary accommodation for flood-affected households while permanent and long-term solutions are being pursued.

Government said that relocation efforts are ongoing with around 120 temporary residential units already completed and occupied in the Mnquma Local Municipality.
The Eastern Cape premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has welcomed the relocation process and said that it was a testament to the province’s resilience and ability to mobilise resources quickly in times of need.
“Our priority is to restore dignity and stability to families who lost their homes in the floods. The relocation to Mayden Farm ensures that no one is left behind, and the support from SASSA will go a long way in helping families rebuild their lives,” Mabuyane said. The devastating floods hit parts of the Eastern Cape in June and Mthatha was the most affected area. The floods claimed 103 lives.
