A SUSPECT (42) was fatally wounded in gunfire with the police near Tombo in Port St Johns on January 14.
Police said members attached to the Tactical Response Team were on duty when they received information about a person in possession of a firearm in Tombo.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said that the suspect was shot while attempting to run away, firing shots towards police.
“On investigation, police noticed that their vehicle had a bullet hole, but no police members were injured,” she said, adding that police found an unlicensed firearm (revolver) and magazine with ammunition.
Mawisa added that the Independent Police Investigative Unit (IPID) was informed and will handle the investigation.
