AFTER being in the municipal council from 2011 to 2021 under African National Congress (ANC), former deputy mayor for the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Local Municipality Philani Shange is now gunning for his comeback.

Shange was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Harry Gwala region for more than 28 years. He resigned last month from the ANC and joined a new political party, African Renaissance Unity (ARU), claiming that the ANC no longer serves its purpose.

Under a new political home, Shange hopes to make a comeback in the municipal council, and this time around, his eyes are on the district level since his name is on top of the PR list of candidates.

“My task to fight for the needy must continue even if I am in a different political party,” he said.

Shange was an ANC councillor between 2011 and 2021, and a deputy mayor from 2016 to 2021 in the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Local Municipality. He said joining a new party was not easy since his political career was started at a young age under the ANC.

The ARU launched in KZN ahead of the local government elections, and now the party is making inroads in the Harry Gwala region.
