A Mthatha woman had to stop the police and seek help from being assaulted at 10pm on April 4.

The woman from Chris Hani Park approached the police who were on patrol after she was beaten, allegedly by her boyfriend.

Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo said the response by police resulted in the arrest of the woman’s boyfriend (29) who was found in possession of a 9mm Norinco pistol with intact serial number.

Police OR Tambo district commissioner Major General Norman Modishana has praised the police for their quick response to the complaint. The suspect was due to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a charge of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The assault charge, which stems from a domestic-related matter, is proceeding separately, concluded Matyolo.
