A CLEANING initiative themed: “Bin it” by the Matatiele Local Municipality was conducted in collaboration with other stakeholders to keep the town of Matatiele clean.
The clean-up programme was meant to encourage individuals to take responsibility for the cleanliness of the town.
It also promoted self-regulation and awareness through small actions like disposing of a snack packet in front of a bin.
The campaign highlighted that clean-ups are not just about collecting litter but also about striving for a waste-free Matatiele.
Municipal community portfolio head, Councillor Shereen Booth, emphasised that the initiative was directly aimed at addressing community concerns about town cleanliness.
“The initiative goes beyond picking up litter. It is about fostering a culture of responsibility and self-awareness, and making the conscious decision to use bins instead of littering,” she said.
Nine parolees volunteered to participate in the campaign as part of a community service programme designed to support their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
