Locals do it for themselves

THE South African Communist Party (SACP) will activate its nationwide initiative to fight hunger and foster community self-reliance in the rural village of Hlokozi in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal.

The week-long Activation of the People’s Red Caravan programme, from March 16-22, will support the local community with sustainable local economic drivers such as agriculture and small businesses.

According to SACP Thembisile Hani district secretary Ntlantla Zungu, the initiative was launched to assist local communities to shift from being dependent but rather to confront their daily problems.

“The programme will focus on food security, for example, by helping communities setting up food gardens and farming,” he said.  During the activation phase, initiatives will be designed to ensure long-term sustainability.

SACP leadership will be working side by side with residents of Hlokozi, conducting workshops and helping them identify development opportunities.

Zungu said that the initiative will not only be restricted to the local community of Hlokozi, but other rural areas in the Harry Gwala district will also benefit.
