A POLICE operation called Operation Shanela, organised by the Mthatha Vehicle Crime Investigative Unit (VCIU), confiscated four vehicles suspected to be stolen in Balasi and Mvumelwano, Qumbu, in the Eastern Cape.
The operation on July 17 also led to the arrest of two suspects (32 and 39).
The first suspect was found in possession of a Toyota Hilux D4D which had an Mbekweni case number of July 2024.

The other suspect was found in possession of a Toyota Hilux with a Kleinvlei case number dating back to July 2024. Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo said that the two other impounded vehicles included a Toyota Etios with a Dieprivier case number and a Toyota GD6 with a Khayelitsha case number.
“The duo will appear before the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen vehicles,” he said.
Police OR Tambo district commissioner Major General Norman Modishana has applauded the commitment by the unit members in making sure that vehicle theft is fought tooth and nail, as it leaves rightful owners psychologically and mentally distressed.
