THE Mthatha Regional Court recently sentenced a suspect (25) to 30 years’ imprisonment for carjacking and unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The conviction followed an incident that occurred in July last year in which the suspect hijacked a VW Polo in Chartham Street in Mthatha.
The vehicle was later found in the Mthatha CBD and the suspect was arrested. Captain Welile Matyolo said the suspect had been in custody throughout the trial after his bail attempt failed.
“The court sentenced the suspect to 15 years for carjacking and a further 15 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspect was also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” added Matyolo.
Police OR Tambo district commissioner Major General Norman Modishana has welcomed the court outcome and praised the dedicated police officers involved in the case.
“I commend all the police officials who successfully worked together to ensure that the perpetrator was brought to book. Justice has finally been served,” said Major General Modishana.
