SAMWU re-elects national treasurer

REPORTER

THE hard working Umzimvubu Local Municipality employee Nwabisa Majova has recently earned a top post in the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU).

Majova was re-elected as the union’s national treasurer at the 13th national congress in Mbombela.

The congress was themed: Towards four decades and beyond in defence of workers’ interests.

It brought together delegates from across South Africa. The event was an important platform to reflect on how far the union has come and to map out the future of the union in terms of protecting and advancing the rights of municipal workers.

Majova’s re-election has been described as a significant milestone that speaks volumes about her dedication, integrity and deep understanding of financial management and governance within the local government.

In speaking about her responsibilities as the union’s national treasurer, she called on workers to remain united and steadfast in defending their rights.

“I would like to emphasise the importance of solidarity, resilience and active participation in building a stronger and more responsive union. The progress of organised labour depends on the collective strength and commitment of its members,” she stated.

The union said that it will further strengthen the voice of workers and support constructive engagement between labour and government, especially at a time when municipalities face a range of challenges.
