EASTERN Cape Hawks have launched an intensive and coordinated manhunt for suspects involved in the fatal shooting of a serving police Sergeant Ndodomzi Dion Tengile (42) in Butterworth.

Tengile was attached to Visible Policing at Port St Johns SAPS.

He was attacked while off duty on February 2, 2024, travelling with his spouse from Port St Johns to Butterworth.

Two gunmen fired shots and fatally wounded him, and later robbed his spouse of cash and personal belongings before fleeing with the deceased’s Toyota Fortuner.

The vehicle was later recovered abandoned not far from the crime scene. A docket for the sergeant’s murder was handed over to the Hawks for intensive investigation. Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said a multidisciplinary team was activated, composed of seasoned detectives, forensic experts and crime intelligence operatives to ensure that the perpetrators are traced and apprehended without delay.

“The Hawks are appealing to any person who may have witnessed suspicious movements in Butterworth in the Zizamele Township during the specific date or observed individuals abandoning or parking the recovered vehicle. If anyone has information regarding persons suddenly in possession of unexplained cash or firearms or any knowledge that may assist in identifying the suspects, they must urgently come forward,” Mhlakuvana appealed.
