THE farm community of Vogevlei near Franklin, KwaZulu-Natal, has given special honours to Mzokuthula Tolo and Xola Siphengana for finishing this year’s Comrades Marathon. Last week, the farm area was a hive of activities with dance, music and flash balloons as locals celebrated the runners.
Though Siphengana was not present during the ceremony, he was described as a hero for finishing the Comrades Marathon at a time of 7:27:10, while Tolo received a silver medal after he crossed the finish line at 7:21:28.
“I don’t have words to thank Caroline Long, because she is the one who organised this welcoming ceremony with the community to celebrate our achievement,” said Tolo at the ceremony. He shared his ambitions about the community, saying that he wants to remain an inspiration to young children so no matter where they come from, they must focus on their goals.
Caroline Long, who has been mentoring Tolo and Siphengana, was impressed with their performance during the Comrades Marathon. Both runners belong to the XJ Athletics Club.
