Councillor’s sexual assault case put to rest

SIPHELELE NKETO

A CASE of sexual assault against a Matatiele Local Municipality councillor has been put to finality by the Maluti Magistrate’s Court recently.

The councillor, accused of sexually assaulting the victim on three occasions, committed the crime at an ANC Youth League car wash programme in March last year.

The second offence was at the youth league’s tournament in Ward 5 in March last year and the third offence was committed in July last year.

“In all incidents, the accused was charged and convicted for sexual assault,” said Luxolo Tyali, NPA regional spokesperson, Eastern Cape division.

The councillor was sentenced to undergo four years of imprisonment or to pay a fine of R150 000. Tyali said the fine was deferred.

Attempts to get hold of the Matatiele Local Municipality failed at the time of going to print. Meanwhile DA councillor Wonga Potwana has welcomed the sentence and said that it will send a strong message to other perpetrators of crime.
