UMUZIWABANTU Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has warned members of the public about someone targeting residents and asking them to make payments for overdue municipal accounts into an ABSA bank account to avoid disconnection.

“This is a scam,” said municipal spokesperson Bruce Jalubani.

The person calls himself Owen, said Jalubani, who added that all municipal payments are only made using the official banking details reflecting on municipal statements.

He said the municipality will never instruct customers to pay into any personal or alternative account.

“If you are due for disconnection, the municipality will communicate your outstanding balance in writing through official correspondence,” he said.
