UMZIMVUBU Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) were widely applauded for their fresh produce displays and direct-to-customer interaction at the Royal Agricultural Show in Howick, from October 7-11.

This year’s participation in the show highlighted not only the growing strength of Umzimvubu’s SMME sector but the important role that agriculture and farming continue to play in creating livelihoods, strengthening local economies and opening up opportunities for rural communities.

The four Umzimvubu SMMEs that participated at the show showcased their goods, from fresh vegetables to garments, herbs, maize and locally produced cosmetics.

Umzimvubu Local Municipality mayor Zukiswa Ndevu said agriculture remains a key pillar of the local economic development strategy in the municipality area, mentioning the empowerment of communities to become active participants in the economy, create employment opportunities, improve food security and build resilient rural livelihoods.

She said the success of agricultural initiatives demonstrates the importance of the government working together with communities to unlock economic opportunities and improve livelihoods.

“This commitment is also reflected in the municipality’s practical support for farming communities. In the 2025/2026 financial year, Umzimvubu supported 61 agricultural projects,” she stated. She added that the participation of Umzimvubu SMMEs at the Royal Agricultural Show represents more than an opportunity. She said it places local entrepreneurs and farmers in a wider marketplace and creates visibility for locally produced goods as well as highlighting the role of agriculture, enterprise development and innovation in building sustainable rural livelihoods.

“As these businesses engage with customers, fellow entrepreneurs and potential partners at the show are showcasing what Umzimvubu has to offer, from its agricultural produce and natural resources to the determination and ingenuity of its people,” she added.

The Royal Agricultural Show offers a platform for emerging enterprises to take their products beyond their immediate communities through participating in the show. Local entrepreneurs promote their brands, engage with potential customers, access new markets, establish business networks and explore partnerships that can contribute to the growth and sustainability of their businesses.
