Hikers explore scenery

THE diverse scenery of Ntsizwa with its dramatic mountain peaks and cliffs was a highlight for over 95 hikers who participated in a two-day inaugural Ntsizwa Hiking Trail last weekend. Organised by the Umzimvubu Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape, the event was attended by crafters as well as hiking enthusiasts from across the Alfred Nzo district and surrounding areas.

Its objective was to provide hikers with an opportunity to explore scenic landscapes, rich cultural heritage and rural hospitality of the Umzimvubu area, while showcasing the municipality’s growing tourism potential. The hiking adventure started with hikers making their way through the beautiful Ntsizwa mountain landscape and then moved towards Lugelweni village, the endpoint of the trail.

Along the route, they were treated to spectacular mountain views, indigenous vegetation and birdlife as they experienced the natural beauty of the area. The refreshing Lugelweni waterfalls provided a memorable conclusion to the hiking adventure. Zimkhitha Peyana, a hiker, described the event as the most exciting and rewarding experience, although it was her first hiking adventure. Peyana embraced the challenge and enjoyed being surrounded by nature while walking alongside fellow hiking enthusiasts.

“I would like to encourage other people who have never participated in a hike not to be intimidated by the experience, but to start preparing for the next Ntsizwa Hiking Trail,” she expressed.

Meanwhile, the event placed strong emphasis on community-based tourism and local economic development, while the flea market provided a platform to 35 crafters and entrepreneurs to showcase their products and talents. Exhibitors represented various categories, including designers, farmers, woodworkers, painters and artists, while tourism information and other locally produced offerings were also made available.

The Umzimvubu Local Municipality extended words of appreciation to communities, tourism cooperatives, crafters, stakeholders, organisers and everyone who contributed to making the inaugural event a success.
