A COMMUNITY search for missing Athi Mnguni (11) of Nomcamba in Ngqeleni ended in tragedy on September 24 when her body was found decomposed in a river.

She was last seen on August 30 playing at a nearby sports field with other children. A multidisciplinary search operation was launched with SAPS members attached to the Mthatha Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS), Ngqeleni SAPS and K9 Unit.

The search was supported by SAPS members of the Mounted Unit and the community, conducting door-to-door investigations in the surrounding area.

Police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said that the body was discovered by a group of hunters in a local forest.

“The girl was found wearing the very same clothes she had on when she disappeared,” Mawisa stated.
