IN the midst of municipal polls set for November 4, Kokstad-based hip-hop musician Abongile Nzimande has spoken out about his enthusiasm for politics, taking a break from music.
Popularly known as ‘Skinnie Rommie’, Nzimande said entering politics will help him leverage community development and policy formation.
After establishing his music career in 2013, he produced an album called Mina Ngiyispokkie, which was released in 2014.
From the farm area of Willowdale in Kokstad, Nzimande launched his political career after being involved in ANC activities. However, during the formation of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in 2023, he left the ANC and joined the MKP as his political home. He has been playing a role in introducing the MKP to Kokstad communities.
His active participation has gained him the position of deputy chairperson in the Kokstad sub-region.
This week he announced his break from music, saying that he will focus on politics.
“Politics has become my choice, not to benefit myself but to use public platforms for advocacy and community development,” he stated, adding that chances of him quitting politics are very slim, though he has not permanently given up on his music career just yet.
