Runners cross epic finish line

AN amazing performance by EmaXesibeni-based XJ Athletics Club (XJAC) runners was celebrated after all 36 club runners crossed the finish line within the 12-hour mark of the Comrades Marathon.

Last Sunday, June 14, the up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg saw other determined runners finish the gruelling race despite missing the official cut-off.

But according to Bonginkosi Mbotshwa, the XJAC spokesperson, all XJAC runners managed to finish the race in a record time.

“Four club runners received silver medals, five received Bill Rowen medals, nine received Robert Mtshali medals and six runners received bronze medals.

“This was the biggest achievement for the club, as it has been achieving this for three consecutive years,” he said.

He added that these results emanate from the commitment of the club management in ensuring that the team runs professionally and that runners from destitute backgrounds are taken care of.

He said early morning runs with very limited resources have produced these good results.

“We appeal to business people and the local government to come forward and support the club with valuable donations such as running shoes for some runners and travelling costs,” he said, adding that some runners struggle to participate in marathons because of lack of financial support.

Elite runner Vakele Jamile, Zoliswa Xola Siphengana and Mzokuthula Tolo performed tremendously while Dr Ayanda Mbele attained a green number in the Comrades Marathon.

Getting a green number means he has run more than 10 Comrades Marathons. Mbotshwa said the club aims to produce and polish young talents in running, while appealing to communities and parents to bring their children to the club.
