EASTERN Cape police have launched investigations following the deaths of two students from iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu.
The deaths occurred in separate campuses of the institution and were reported last weekend. One of the students was from Haven Hills based in KuGompo City and the other one from Mthatha.
In the first incident on Saturday, May 30, at around 2am, a male student (19) was found deceased at Chris Hani Park in Mthatha.
It was alleged that he was walking home from a local tavern when he slipped on wet ground and fell onto a bottle he was carrying. The bottle broke and caused an open wound on his thigh, leading to excessive bleeding.
The next day at Calypso Gardens in Haven Hills, a female student (22) was reported deceased at 1pm after she cooked food wrapped in aluminium foil in a microwave, causing a fire. She suffered burns and is believed to have died from the smoke inhalation.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed the inquest dockets for investigation.
“Both matters are under investigation. Post‑mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the exact causes of death. No arrests have been made, and no witnesses have come forward at this stage,” she concluded. SAPS extended condolences to the families of the two young students.
