Turning hydrogas into energy

THE increasing costs of living in South Africa, triggered by fuel hikes, paraffin and electricity expenses, have prompted the invention of a self-made hydrogas power machine for energy production. Yanga Nongoma (31) had the idea to make a hydrogas power machine in his rural home of Nyaka in Mbizana and turn it into power.

After several efforts to bring the initiative into reality, his family is now using the technique for lights, charging cellphones, and connecting the television and radio. His ambitions are to assist rural communities that struggle with electricity hikes.

He said the self-made hydrogas power only depends on gas and wood or coal to function.

“The idea came into my mind after I noticed the high unemployment rate in South Africa and the rising costs of living. I bought machines with my savings, and in 2023 I started to put my ideas into practice,” Nongoma explained. He said that his trials only became positive in October last year. Nongoma said his invention saves money, though his family still depends on electricity for cooking and connecting other appliances.

He appealed for assistance to create more energy machines to assist other communities and schools.
