THE recent winds that hit most parts of the Eastern Cape and caused damage to Gogela Primary School in EmaXesibeni (Mount Ayliff) left children in desperate need of assistance. The strong winds blew off the roof of a classroom block.
Learners had to be relocated to classrooms that were partially damaged by the wind. A concerned villager, Mongikazi Gwiliza, has called for immediate intervention to help the school with temporary classrooms.
Gwiliza said cold winter temperatures made things worse for school learners as they had to be in school despite the unpleasant conditions of the classrooms.
“The school had been using prefabricated classrooms since 1987. Although the structures were old, the school kept them strong through maintenance,” said Gwiliza, affectionately known as Mother Bunny.
Apart from the classroom block that was blown away, Gwiliza said that another school block was left with holes in the roof and walls, making it difficult for learners to cope. Meanwhile, strong winds also caused interruption to the supply of electricity in parts of the Eastern Cape district such as Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo among them.
