AS part of an initiative to brighten up the KwaBhaca (Mount Frere) town at night, the Umzimvubu Local Municipality has been installing solar-powered streetlights.
The municipality spent close to R1 million on the installation of 30 streetlights recently, through the Infrastructure Development Department during the 2024/2025 financial year. This was a testament from what was stated during the State of the Municipality Address and Budget Speech event at the Sigundwaneni village in Ward 10 where Mayor Zukiswa Ndevu announced that the municipality will install 60 streetlights in Ward 18 of KwaBhaca, with an investment of R2 million.
The municipality said that the installation of these streetlights is nearing completion, with close to 35 streetlights already installed.
“Upon completion, this project will improve pedestrian visibility and personal security and enhance safety by allowing pedestrians and motorists to see each other at night,” said Ndevu, adding that the installation of streetlights will contribute to the fight against crime as many criminal activities occur at night.
