PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) officially welcomed more than 200 new members in the rural village of Ibisi in Umzimkhulu last Friday, May 1.

According to the party’s Harry Gwala Regional Coordinator Bongani Msomi, this signals the growth of the party ahead of the local government elections scheduled to take place on November 4.

Msomi said the new members were 500 in total, but 300 members could not attend the ceremony.

“The new members were coming from various political parties in Umzimkhulu. They were recruited from 2025,” he said, adding that the party is currently pursuing more people to join MKP, targeting Kokstad.

“During the last general elections, MKP did not perform exceptionally well in Kokstad and Umzimkhulu. Now there is an existing strategy to increase our dominance in those areas.” The party also conducted a mass prayer gathering at the Ibisi sports ground and also handed over a five-room house built by the party’s secretary general Sbonelo Nomvalo. A child-headed household welcomed the house.
