THE fight against illegal immigration in the small town of Harding under the Umuziwabantu Local Municipality was applauded following the conviction of eight illegal immigrants.
They were arrested during last month’s municipal-led joint compliance operation in the Harding area.
The operation dealt with non-compliance, illegal trading activities and other related offences within the Harding CBD.
Another operation was conducted on April 24, aiming to restore law and order and also to inspect businesses that were previously found to be non-compliant with health, safety, building regulations and municipal by-laws.
During the operation, five businesses were inspected and two containers and tyres were confiscated from businesses that failed to comply with building regulations.
A further four individuals were arrested for being in the country illegally and for being in possession of fraudulent documents. They were processed with the assistance of the Department of Home Affairs.
The Umuziwabantu Local Municipality has committed to ensure that all businesses operating in Harding comply with applicable laws, municipal by-laws, health and safety requirements and building regulations.
