TWO suspects who robbed school learners at gunpoint in Lungqongqweni, Lusikisiki, were arrested through the support of the local community.
Last Friday, April 3, at 8pm, learners were robbed of their cellphones and money. The duo was cornered by the local community who also alerted the police. When police arrived at the scene, the suspects were arrested and found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with an erased serial number and one live round. Captain Welile Matyolo said off-duty police in the OR Tambo District Task Team, based in Lusikisiki, responded to a complaint of an armed robbery in the area.
He said the police operate between Port St John’s and Flagstaff. Police OR Tambo district commissioner Major General Norman Modishana appreciated the community involvement in the fight against crime and also commended the off-duty police officials for putting an end to the suspects’ reign of terror.
The suspects will appear before the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court soon on charges ranging from unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition to possession of stolen property.
