AN Eastern Cape female teacher (52) appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, October 16, for allegedly being involved in human trafficking and prostitution of young women.

The teacher was arrested on Wednesday at her school in East London, by members of the Hawks. It was alleged that the teacher had been recruiting young women from the areas of Qumbu, Mthatha and Ngqeleni, and later transported them to different areas in East London.

According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, investigations that began in September 2023 uncovered that victims were housed at the suspect’s residence and coerced into prostitution.

“Preliminary findings revealed that the victims were engaged in sexual activities with various clients, from whom they reportedly received payments,” Mhlakuvana stated and said that the suspect supposedly profited from these illegal activities by charging accommodation fees ranging between R250 and R300 per night, depending on the room.

“It is further alleged that the suspect personally collected the proceeds or directed the victims to transfer the funds through her bank account,” he added.

The matter was remanded to October 23 for formal bail application. The teacher has been remanded in custody.
