Man jailed for serious crimes

REPORTER

THE Mthatha High Court has sentenced a suspect (29) to life imprisonment plus a combined 63 years for a string of serious crimes ranging from murder and attempted murder to possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He was linked to the murder and attack of two men in 2023. The men were reported missing in Lubhacweni under KwaBhaca (Mount Frere). One of the missing men was found in the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha with gunshot wounds to his upper body while the other one was found dead in Qumbu.

In March last year, the suspect was arrested and found in possession of an unlicensed firearm. He was denied bail and his case was later transferred to the Mthatha High Court.

His alleged accomplice was killed during a business robbery in Mqanduli before he could be arrested, police said.

Police further said that their investigations revealed that the motive behind the murder and attempted murder was the robbery of the victims’ Toyota Corolla vehicle which was being used as a cab.

“All sentences, totalling 63 years, will run concurrently with the life sentence,” Captain Welile Matyolo said.
