Inspiring future generations of women

THE much-loved SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge has been named “Best Girls’ Tournament of the Year” by SuperSport Schools, in recognition of the tournament’s remarkable contribution to the growth of women’s sport in South Africa. Now celebrating its 15th year, the tournament was established by Schoolgirls’ Sport with sponsorship by SPAR KZN to create a competitive yet celebratory platform that would not only showcase young women’s hockey talent but also widen participation by including schools from underserved areas.

SPAR has been involved in the journey from the very beginning, championing women’s sport and investing in these opportunities for young athletes and officials to develop.

“We believe in building healthier, stronger communities, and sport is one of the most powerful ways to do that,” said Damon Harry, divisional managing director of SPAR KZN.

She said the challenge represents opportunity, empowerment and inclusivity:

“We are proud to partner with the Schoolgirls’ Sport team in creating something that not only develops players and officials but also inspires future generations of women in sport.”

Les Galloway, the chairperson of Schoolgirls’ Sport and former manager of the South African Women’s Hockey Team said the recognition was a tribute not only to schools, players, umpires and officials but also to the incredible support from the title sponsor, SPAR.

“Through SPAR’s commitment and support, we have been able to maintain a strong community ethos while providing a professional approach to the tournament’s organisation,” she added.

Winning this award from SuperSport Schools in its 15th year marks a significant milestone in the journey of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, reaffirming its reputation as one of South Africa’s top tournaments for young women athletes.
