Municipality denies meddling in CFO appointment

SIPHELELE NKETO

THE Greater Kokstad Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal will appoint a new chief financial officer on Friday, August 15, despite claims of political interference.

The post has since been vacant after the previous CFO resigned on March 10. Marlaine Nair, MPL DA KZN spokesperson for Cogta (Department of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs) said that the party has warned about cadre deployment saying it undermines merit, transparency and service delivery.

“Our municipalities need skilled professionals appointed through fair, lawful processes, not politically endorsed candidates chosen behind closed doors,” she stated. However, municipal spokesperson Zolani Siqwayi has denied the allegations of political interference citing that the post was advertised, and legal processes are being followed to fill the post.

“Processes to fill the post are at an advanced stage,” he said, adding that the municipal executive committee will on August 15 present a report with a recommendation to council on the appointment of a CFO.
