PARKING ON SIDEWALKS

The Greater Kokstad Municipality wishes to alert all residents and motorists to the serious dangers associated with parking vehicles on sidewalks. This practice not only contravenes traffic regulations but also causes significant structural damage to the concrete manhole covers installed along pedestrian pathways. These covers are engineered solely to withstand pedestrian traffic and are not designed to bear the excessive weight of vehicles. When compromised, they create hazardous open cavities that pose severe risks to pedestrians, particularly at night when visibility is reduced. Furthermore, broken or dislodged covers allow remains and foreign objects to enter the underground systems, leading to costly blockages and service interruptions that affect the entire community. We urge all residents to refrain from parking on sidewalks to safeguard public safety and ensure the continued functionality of essential infrastructure. Your cooperation is both expected and appreciated as we work together to maintain a safe and functional environment for all.

Sipho Zwane,

Greater Kokstad Municipality Manager
